Deep Brain Stimulation… Again
I’ve been hearing about Deep Brain Stimulation ever since William Burroughs started talking about it back in the 1970s. It was supposed to replace drugs as a method for controlling and altering consciousness, among other things. Of course, not everybody wants to open up their brains to an implant… nor do they want to ship their heads back to the shop for repairs or new models. Still, the future we were promised keeps getting closer — with DBS now being used for Parkinson’s as well as for a few other pathologies.
This recent report is about an experiment in treating serious depression performed by physicians at the University Clinics of Bonn and Cologne.
