A few months back we ran a very exciting interview on the subject of synthetic biology with Drew Endy, an associate professor of bioengineering who created a real cool comic titled Adventures in Synthetic Biology. Since 2005, Endy has also been working on a project "to build a library of standardized biological components for use in genetic research" under the aegis of the BioBricks Foundation.

Now, Nature reports that Endy's new project, BIOFAB, launched by BioBricks in cooperation with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory; Stanford University; and the University of California at Berkeley, is hiring 22 researchers "to develop open-source genetic parts that will comprise an 'operating system' for gene expression."
