In the news this week, Bill Gates expresses concerns about AI dangers on Reddit. Has Microsoft joined the legion of AI doomsayers?
Not everyone at Microsoft agrees. Eric Horvitz, the co-director of Microsoft Research in Redmond is a distinguished scientist in the field of artificial intelligence, and also recently launched the 100 Year AI Study. And Eric has a much more positive view of the technology.
Many years ago I had the opportunity to work with Eric in the days before he joined Microsoft. My company developed a simulation environment for an AI agent Eric’s company was developing. I recall especially Eric’s high energy brilliance. Hanging out with Eric and his co-inspirators Jack Breeze and Bob Fung at the dawn of computational Bayesian methods was amazing and an important landmark for my ideas many years later.
In this video from TEDxAustin 2013, Eric presents a much happier story.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
