Consciousness is a Whole Brain Deal. That was the title of the message I got on Jack Sarfatti’s mailing list this weekend, along with the link below, and I can’t really improve on it.
From New Scientist: "Signals from electrodes seem to show that consciousness arises from the coordinated activity of the entire brain. The signals also take us closer to finding an objective "consciousness signature" that could be used to probe the process in animals and people with brain damage without inserting electrodes."

Its not just the whole brain, but the whole body that is involved in Consciousness.
Every single cell in the human body is potentially capable of all forms of consciousness [that is, each single cell is a potential human]. The cells work in concert with each other to produce “layered arrays of collections of specialized cell outputs” and the interaction between the specific outputs collectively produce mental state consciousness. ( consciousness is probably not electrical, but magnetic, while the communications systems which connect up the cellular outputs is probably electical).
The arrays of cell groups that support “consciousness” represents a genetically predisposition[the basic cell], genetically engineered by interactive contact with environmental experience. Its the entire set of cells in the body that establish total consciousness.
The current genetic and expression state of the cell is a result of interactive, continuous experience based remodeling. Mental state is a meta environment it acts like a reference for recall. Activation for recall is an interactive response which calls on the appropriate cell sets and groups of cell sets to timely contribute their part of the whole into the space, time and orientation of the consciousness.
Change the mental state meta environment and the same cell sets might not even produce a conscious expression.
